April 2025 CarbonBetter® Impact Update
Every month we share the positive impact our customers have made through their use of CarbonBetter-certified 100% energy, which is included in every Provision clean energy supply plan. Each customer on these plans receives an email with their personal impact for the month, and this blog post reflects the impact all of our customers have made together since we became CarbonBetter-certified in October 2020.
We’re honored to be able to provide affordable clean energy that makes a real difference. Check out all of our past Impact Updates here!

About the Project
Nestled along the Orhaneli River in Turkey’s Bursa Province, the Uluabat Hydroelectric Power Plant is a standout example of renewable energy infrastructure in the region. Commissioned in 2010, this run-of-river hydroelectric facility has an installed capacity of 100 MW, supplying clean electricity to thousands of Turkish households while supporting national decarbonization goals.
Owned by EnerjiSA Enerji Üretim A.S., Uluabat harnesses the natural flow of the river to generate electricity without large-scale reservoir construction, helping minimize environmental disruption. As part of Turkey’s broader commitment to increasing renewable energy capacity, this hydro project plays a vital role in advancing energy security and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
How It Works
The Uluabat Hydroelectric Power Plant operates using a run-of-river system, which means it generates electricity by channeling a portion of the Orhaneli River’s natural flow through turbines before returning the water downstream. This design eliminates the need for large-scale reservoirs, helping preserve the river’s natural rhythm and surrounding habitats. A diversion dam guides water into a 7.5-kilometer headrace tunnel that feeds into the powerhouse, where two high-efficiency Francis-type turbines convert the flowing water into electricity. The plant’s minimal water storage requirements, combined with its integration into Turkey’s national grid, allow Uluabat to consistently deliver clean, renewable power with a smaller environmental footprint than traditional hydroelectric facilities.
Project Benefits
Uluabat contributes significantly to Turkey’s renewable energy output, generating approximately 400 GWh of electricity annually—enough to power tens of thousands of homes. By displacing fossil fuel–based electricity generation, the plant helps avoid around 200,000 tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions each year, supporting global climate action. Its environmentally conscious design minimizes disruption to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, demonstrating a more sustainable approach to hydroelectric development. In addition to its environmental benefits, Uluabat plays a role in enhancing Turkey’s energy independence by reducing reliance on imported energy. The project also supports regional economic growth through job creation and infrastructure investment, making it a valuable asset to both the national energy strategy and local communities.
Conclusion
The Uluabat Hydroelectric Power Plant is a compelling example of how renewable energy can be both efficient and environmentally mindful. Through smart design and clean generation, it supports climate goals, boosts local energy independence, and demonstrates the value of investing in sustainable infrastructure.
