Impact Updates

May 2025 CarbonBetter® Impact Update Copy

Every month we share the positive impact our customers have made through their use of CarbonBetter-certified 100% energy, which is included in every Provision clean energy supply plan. Each customer on these plans receives an email with their personal impact for the month, and this blog post reflects the impact all of our customers have made together since we became CarbonBetter-certified in October 2020.

We’re honored to be able to provide affordable clean energy that makes a real difference. Check out all of our past Impact Updates here!

About the Project

The Reducing Gas Leakages within the Titas Gas Distribution Network project is a pioneering initiative based in Greater Dhaka, Bangladesh, aimed at cutting methane emissions by upgrading aging infrastructure and implementing advanced leak detection and repair (LDAR) strategies.

As Bangladesh’s largest city continues to grow, so does demand on its natural gas infrastructure. Much of the Titas Gas system, however, is aging and poorly maintained, resulting in significant methane leakage. Methane is a particularly potent greenhouse gas—over 80 times more impactful than CO₂ over a 20-year period—so reducing these emissions plays a vital role in addressing near-term climate change.

This project is one of the first of its kind in Bangladesh, demonstrating how local solutions can make a meaningful impact on global emissions.

How It Works

The project employs state-of-the-art technologies and best practices to identify and repair gas leaks:

  • Advanced Leak Detection: Crews use Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) and other specialized tools to identify even small methane leaks throughout the network.
  • Targeted Repairs: Once leaks are located, trained technicians repair the faulty equipment or pipeline sections to stop the methane from escaping.
  • Ongoing Monitoring: Routine surveys and maintenance ensure that repaired leaks do not recur and that new leaks are caught early.

The result is a significant reduction in methane emissions—emissions that would have otherwise gone unnoticed and unaddressed in a traditional system.

Project Benefits

The Titas Gas Leak Reduction Project delivers both environmental and local benefits:

Scalable Model: Demonstrates how methane reduction strategies can be replicated across other gas networks in the region and globally.

Climate Impact: Reduces the release of methane, a high-impact greenhouse gas, contributing to global efforts to limit warming.

Health & Safety: Minimizing gas leaks improves air quality and reduces the risk of fire or explosion, increasing safety for local communities.

Energy Efficiency: Conserving gas that would otherwise be lost means more energy is available to meet demand without increasing supply.

Conclusion

The Titas Gas Distribution Network Leak Reduction Project is a powerful example of how technical upgrades and climate-smart practices can deliver real, measurable emissions reductions. By reducing methane emissions and improving local infrastructure, this project helps accelerate climate progress while enhancing public safety and energy efficiency.
