March 2025 CarbonBetter® Impact Update
Every month we share the positive impact our customers have made through their use of CarbonBetter-certified 100% energy, which is included in every Provision clean energy supply plan. Each customer on these plans receives an email with their personal impact for the month, and this blog post reflects the impact all of our customers have made together since we became CarbonBetter-certified in October 2020.
We’re honored to be able to provide affordable clean energy that makes a real difference. Check out all of our past Impact Updates here!

About the Project
Located in the western Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project is one of the largest and most impactful forest conservation efforts on the African continent. Covering approximately 300,000 hectares of tropical forest, the project is designed to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), while creating meaningful benefits for local communities and protecting critical biodiversity.
Mai Ndombe is part of the Congo Basin—home to the second-largest tropical rainforest in the world—and this project plays a pivotal role in preserving its carbon-rich ecosystems. Verified by the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards, this initiative stands as a global model for conservation.
How It Works
The Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project tackles deforestation through an integrated strategy that includes:
- Monitoring and enforcement to prevent illegal logging and land conversion.
- Community partnerships that promote sustainable livelihoods, education, and healthcare.
- Biodiversity protection by maintaining habitats for endangered species such as forest elephants and bonobos.
- Emission reduction credits that provide a financial mechanism to fund the project while offering carbon offsets to businesses and individuals.
The project’s success hinges on its ability to address root causes of deforestation, like poverty and lack of infrastructure, by investing in long-term community development.
Project Benefits
The benefits of the Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project extend far beyond carbon:
- Climate Action: By avoiding deforestation, the project prevents the release of millions of tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions, directly supporting international efforts to combat climate change.
- Community Empowerment: Over 50,000 people benefit from initiatives funded by the project, including improved schools, clean water systems, and medical clinics.
- Ecological Protection: Mai Ndombe is a biodiversity hotspot, and this project safeguards critical habitats for rare and threatened species.
Conclusion
The Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project proves that forest conservation can go hand-in-hand with sustainable development and climate impact. By protecting one of the world’s most important ecosystems and uplifting local communities, the project helps shape a more sustainable future—one carbon credit at a time.
