IKEA Furnishing the Future with Renewable Energy

IKEA is one of the early adopters in tackling sustainability head-on. Their sustainability efforts are focused on providing clean energy to their retail storefronts through solar panels and wind farms. Provision recently purchased renewable energy certificates that help fund their renewable energy efforts. These RECs help support the company’s effort to reduce its climate footprint and to generate its own clean energy.

Renewable Energy Certificates Explained

100% renewable electricity is included automatically in every Provision electricity supply plan, and we use renewable energy certificates, or RECs, to deliver on our clean energy promise. Homes are connected to the power grid by transmission lines, and the electricity that’s supplied is derived from a variety of generation resources, both renewable and non-renewable. This is because when clean energy is generated and put on the grid, it’s mixed with other fuel sources there, making it difficult for environmentally conscious consumers to supply their homes with 100% clean energy. Provision ensures more clean energy is put on the grid by funding renewable generators through the purchase of RECs. These certificates fund electricity generation equal to the volume consumed by Provision customers, thus leading to a cleaner grid and delivering on pour 100% clean energy promise. So far this year, Provision customers helped fund over 84,000 mWh of renewable electricity using RECs.

An Investment In Renewable Energy

IKEA recently announced plans to invest an extra $4.8 billion into renewable energy efforts by 2030. This major investment will include green energy storage, to make better use of their renewable energy generation, electric vehicle charging infrastructure installed at their retail storefronts, and hydrogen fuels to cut emissions from their fleet of delivery vans. This announcement is just another part of their ongoing sustainability efforts.

Over the last decade, IKEA’s parent company, Ingka Group, has spent $3 billion installing 935,000 solar panels on the roofs of its warehouses and retail stores and invested in 10 solar parks and 547 wind turbines. The company is able to produce more renewable electricity than it uses. These investments support IKEA’s efforts to make better use of renewable energy generation and take one step forward to a net-zero society.

IKEA’s renewable energy efforts began in 2016 with the plan to generate more renewable electricity than it was currently using.  In 2019, IKEA committed to becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2030. These investments and sustainability efforts are marking the steps IKEA is taking towards 100% renewable energy across its value chain. IKEA is committed to building for a future that is clean and green.
